While Shakespeare told “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players”, queen Coco affirmed, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same”.

What do these two quotes have in common? Both describe the fact that our mood, our behavior can influence our life and appearance. Life is made by choices, choices that determine our day, that give us the part we would play during that day, and fashion is the mean through which we can do so: clothes, accessories, colors describe ourselves, they affirm our personality and are our business card in society. Choosing one jacket instead of another, for example, is the choice that can make us appear happier, if it’s a colorful jacket, or more professional, if we think about grey or dark jackets.

Following Coco’s quotes, we need to know how to express our uniqueness and style in a society in which everything is available to all.

Nowaday’s we see that most people are dressed in the same way, conformed, similar. This is the result of the fact that most people are too influenced by trends, they copy the trends instead of bringing some inspiration from them, and this leads to the similarity among people, usually of the same age.

Here is the answer: to make us unique, we need to understand how and how much we want to be influenced by trends.

Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.

(Gianni Versace)

We need to understand the importance of creating our style, declaring our personality, and being an active part of the trends, without being passively overwhelmed. It’s crucial to succeed in making unique our way of appearance, and it’s possible to do so by letting our personality emerge over the trends. All of us are different and have characteristics that can and have to be expressed.

Why don’t we do so with the help of fashion?

Fashion is an attitude, it’s true. But fashion is also an amusing game and an indispensable means by which we can be ourselves. While fashion is the physical means, style is the practical expression of the self, of our personality. Style is affirmation, creation, it’s the capability of making every clothes, every accessory unique, and ours.

Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself. (Oscar de la Renta)

How can we create our style?

Creating a style needs time, dedication, and a bit of creativity. Let’s start affirming that style is something that everybody has, it’s something that defines us and that makes us feel comfortable. To express our style through fashion means to choose and mix all those clothes, colors, accessories that make us feel happy, even if they’re not trendy.

Fashion is very important. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well.

(Vivienne Westwood)

I’m not a fashion victim, not literally. I follow the trends and fashion, but I like choosing those pieces, those mixes, those inspirations that can go with my personality and my outfit.

I think that fashion was created to make us happy and give us a means of communication, different from writing and speaking, to express in a unique way who we are, breaking conventional rules.
